Nostalgia '08 held on 8th March

Nostalgia, the annual alumni reunion of JBIMS, was held this year on the 8th of March in Mumbai. The venue was The Mayfair Rooms, Worli. The event, as always, saw enthusiastic participation from Bajaj alumni.

The evening was flagged off with musical performances by current students of JBIMS - the golden oldies they sung set a 'nostalgic' mood for the evening ahead. The Director's address followed, wherein he informed our alumni about the highlights of the past year at Bajaj and formally welcomed everyone to Nostalgia 2007. This was followed by an energetic dance performance by JBIMS students and the foot-tapping numbers had everyone in the audience cheering and clapping along.

As per tradition, Nostalgia 2008 saw the felicitation of the Silver Jubilee batch, i.e. the batch of 1983. Alumni of this batch from across the world were in attendance and this made the proceedings even more special. There was a mood of reminiscences and fun as the alumni shard their thoughts on completing 25 years of being Bajaj Alumni. They announced a generous contribution by their batch towards improving some parts of the college infrastructure and this gesture made Nostalgia 2008 even more special.

We also had the Decade Batch felicitation, carrying ahead from its debut last year. Members of the batch of 1998 celebrated 10 years of being Bajaj alumni and relived the warm camaraderie of their JBIMS days.

Towards the end, our alumnus Mr. Rajagopal (batch of 1974), who is a visiting faculty at JBIMS, addressed the alumni present. He set a great example for everyone with his passion for JBIMS and his speech motivated one and all to do their bit towards rebuilding brand Bajaj.

Our beloved Professor Moradian also addressed the students and alumni, encouraging them to come forward and help JBIMS soar to greater heights in the future. His speech, peppered with his inimitable witticisms was the perfect way to conclude the formal part of the evening, after which people went on to enjoy drinks and dinner and later hit the dance floor. After all the fun and enjoyment, everyone present joined in to sing the Bajaj anthem - a fitting end to a perfect evening! Updated alumni directories along with a token of appreciation were presented to our alumni before they left.

Nostalgia 2008 was a great success and the support and participation of our alumni made this reunion even more memorable. We hope this continues year after year and that the flame of the Bajaj legacy continues to burn bright forevermore.

Alumni Chapters in Mid- November

In our bid to keep the synapses of our alumni network vibrant and alive, we are very happy to announce that alumni chapter meetings have been scheduled around mid-November across Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong and London. We take special pleasure in announcing that from this time onwards, we shall be organising alumni chapter meets at Pune and Kolkata as well!
Alumni Chapters are informal get-togethers, over dinner, where the Bajaj alumni in each city can meet up, exchange reminiscences about their days at JBIMS and also get updated about the latest happenings at the Institute. Not only this, alumni can choose to use these meetings as fora to discuss industry happenings and as knowledge-transfer platforms. And, of course, these meetings are useful in keeping the professional and personal network buzzing! You can say that these chapters are like Nostalgia, but on a city-level and are especially meaningful for all of you who cannot make it to Mumbai around the time of Nostalgia, our annual Alumni Get-together.

A Movie by Alumni of the Batch of 1996!

Winners don’t do different things, they do things differently – but Bajaj-ites do different things – AND do them differently! We are proud to announce that three of our alumni have done just this. Ketan Gohil (producer), Atul Taishete (director) and Raj Singh Verma (actor) from the batch of ’96 have made a film, titled ‘Rewind’. Not only is film-making an unusual move for management graduates, but also the way this movie has been made is different– the film is a ‘reverse’ film and moves from the end to the start - and within each scene, the action is reversed as well!

‘Rewind’ has had its World Premier at the Locarno Film Festival (Switzerland) and is also selected to be screened at the Palm Spring International Festival and the LA International Short Film Festival (US), the Montreal World Film Festival (Canada) and the Milano Film Festival (Italy).

And you can visit the website of the film:

We’re sure you’ll enjoy this remarkable brainchild of your fellow Bajaj-ites!

Noshir Kaka, Director, McKinsey & Co., inducts the batch of 2009

Continuing its proud tradition of inducting every new batch with a lecture by one of its most prominent alumni, JBIMS inducted the batch of 2009 with a lecture by Mr. Noshir Kaka, Director, McKinsey & Co. Mr. Kaka; an alumnus of the batch of 1994 is the global Practice leader of the Outsourcing and Off-shoring Practice at McKinsey.

In a highly interactive session Mr. Kaka spoke about his experiences at the institute and the great legacy of JBIMS. He highlighted the advantages the students of the institute enjoy by virtue of being located at the heart of the business district of India’s financial capital, Mumbai. Recounting his own experiences Mr. Kaka talked about how he undertook several live corporate projects while at the institute and even received two pre-placement offers.

Mr. Kaka talked about the very competitive nature of admissions to JBIMS which serves as an excellent filtering mechanism and ensures a very high quality level of students that make it to the institute. Mere interaction between different members of the batch is an opportunity for learning and knowledge sharing.

The batch was introduced to the universal concept of a structured approach towards problem solving. Mr. Kaka emphasized the importance of developing a definite framework for collecting data and facts, and an analysis which involves testing of a hypotheses leading to a crisp recommendation towards a solution.

Having worked at the McKinsey office in London for a year, Mr. Kaka also briefed the batch about the experience of serving on overseas assignments as well. Drawing on his experiences in sectors as diverse as ITES, Oil & Gas, Banking and Aviation he helped the batch gain a holistic perspective of various businesses and functions.

The session entailed invaluable advice for some of the brightest young minds in the country at the very start of their management program. It served as a great source of inspiration to the batch of 2009.

Ms. Vinita Bali, MD, Britannia Industries Ltd. visited JBIMS in the first week of the new academic year 2007-2008 for a session on challenges of an international career with students of the senior batch. An alumnus of the institute, Ms. Bali, has had a rich array of top management experience in leading multinationals like Coca Cola and Cadburys across geographies spanning the Americas, Africa, and Europe.

The session assumes great relevance given the increasing the number of international placements at JBIMS. Ms. Bali outlined the strong process driven culture which is a hallmark of leading corporations in the US and Europe and the nuances in the work cultures in India and abroad. She spoke at length on her experiences and the challenges faced at various stages in her career.

Given the highly demanding and fast paced lives of modern corporate executives, Ms. Bali made a strong case for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. She cited the example of globally acclaimed marketing guru Mr. Sergio Zyman, with whom she worked at the Zyman Group as Managing Principal and Head of the Business Strategy practice. In her very lucid style, Ms. Bali made the session highly interactive, inviting a several questions from the audience.
